Description
Though the term Cat’s Eye is often applied to different gemstones, the most prized and captivating variety comes from the Chrysoberyl family. Not all chrysoberyls reveal this enchanting effect, but when they do, the result is the extraordinary phenomenon of chatoyancy. A sharp, luminous band of light that glides across the gem, resembling the eye of a cat.
In Sri Lanka, transparent to translucent chrysoberyls without this effect are relatively common. However, when chatoyancy does appear, these rare gems are expertly cut into cabochons to showcase their dazzling eye. Making them highly sought after in both local and international markets.
The Chrysoberyl family itself includes two remarkable types: Cymophane (the classic Cat’s Eye) and the enchanting Alexandrite, famous for its dramatic color change. Together, they represent some of the world’s most mysterious and desirable gemstones.
