Description
Garnet is a fascinating family of gemstones that dazzles in nearly every color of the rainbow, with the rare exception of blue. Found in a wide range of varieties, including almandine, andradite, grossular, pyrope, spessartine, and uvarovite, garnets are admired for their richness of color and unique visual effects. Some stones even exhibit asterism, chatoyancy, or a remarkable color change when viewed under different lighting conditions.
While garnets share the same basic crystal structure, their diverse chemical compositions create over twenty recognized species, with only a handful being prized as gemstones. In Sri Lanka, several commercially valuable varieties are found, including:
Almandine has deep red to violet hues, rich and intense
Grossular ranging from green to golden tones
Pyrope a fiery red is often associated with passion and vitality
Spessartine has warm orange to reddish-brown shades, glowing with vibrancy
With their remarkable color diversity, symbolic meanings, and durability, Sri Lankan garnets are both versatile and timeless, making them a perfect choice for collectors and jewelry lovers alike.
